Rețele Electrice Romania, part of the PPC group in Romania, has completed the modernisation of the 110/20kV IRUM substation in Deva, following an investment of RON 19 million (€3.8 million).

The substation, which has been in operation since 1980, is a crucial component of the local energy grid, serving 14,000 customers through a network of 33 kilometres of underground 20kV power lines and 53 secondary substations. It also functions as a primary backup for two other key substations in the area.

Mihai Pește, General Director of Rețele Electrice Romania, said: "This project brings visible benefits to the local community by reducing the duration of outages and increasing the security of the electricity supply, contributing to improving the quality of the service offered. The modernisation thus contributes to the stability and sustainable development of the area, providing solid premises for economic and social progress."

The modernisation was a complex, multi-stage undertaking. The first phase focused on updating the 20 kV primary equipment and replacing one of the two 110/20kV transformers with a newer model. The relay protection system was also modernised, replacing old electromechanical relays with modern numerical protection terminals.

The second phase addressed the substation building itself and the 110 kV primary equipment, including the replacement of the second transformer.
