The European Parliament and the Council have selected the French city of Lille to host the future EU Customs Authority (EUCA), following a final decision reached on Wednesday.
Bucharest, which had submitted a bid to host the new agency, lost the race to the French city after a competitive selection process between nine member states.
The decision was finalised after negotiating teams from both institutions met to evaluate a shortlist of top locations. Lille's successful bid was bolstered by its strategic position as a logistical crossroads, its extensive experience in managing significant goods flows, and the immediate availability of a dedicated building. Furthermore, the French proposal included a commitment to cover the authority's ongoing upkeep costs.
Dirk Gotink, Parliament's Rapporteur for the file (EPP, NL), said: "Today marks a milestone for the European Customs Union. In a joint decision, Parliament and Council have selected Lille, France, as the home of the new EU Customs Authority. It is the right choice. France is one of Europe's leading customs nations; one in three parcels entering the EU passes through French territory. Lille's strategic location at the crossroads of Europe makes it the natural hub for this authority. This sends a clear signal: France will be central to the future of our customs union."
The establishment of the EUCA is a central component of the EU customs code overhaul initiated by the Commission in 2023.
