Rețele Electrice Romania, part of the PPC group in Romania, has completed modernisation works for the Obor Station, one of the most complex electricity distribution stations in Bucharest.

The company invested over €13 million from its own funds to increase safety and quality of electricity supply for consumers in the capital, while preparing the grid for increased consumption requirements generated by electrification of transport and district heating.

"This investment is more than a technical modernisation — it is a concrete step in building the network that will support the city's energy transition," said Mihai Peşte, General Manager of Rețele Electrice Romania.

The modernisation project started in 2019 with the design phase, followed by complex refurbishment works carried out in stages to maintain continuity in supplying consumers with energy. The station currently serves about 69,000 customers, including homes, schools, hospitals, shopping centres and public institutions. Its expanded capacity prepares it to absorb new types of consumption such as charging stations for electric vehicles, heat pumps and smart systems as the energy transition advances in Bucharest.

The modernisation involved complete consolidation of the building and replacement of electrical equipment without interrupting supply to customers. The works targeted modernisation of high-voltage (110 kV) and medium-voltage (10 kV and 20 kV) electrical installations. The 110 kV substation building was recompartmentalised, while a new building was constructed for the 110 kV GIS equipment and a modern control room.

The modernised station has an installed power of 200 MVA, provided by five transformers of 40 MVA each. A photovoltaic solar system was installed on the roofs of the substation's buildings to compensate consumption of the transformer station's own services and increase energy efficiency. The major benefits include increasing security of supply for existing customers, increasing flexibility of the high and medium voltage network, and the ability to absorb new categories of consumption generated by progressive electrification of the economy and society.
