Depogaz Ploiești, a Romgaz Group company and the largest operator of underground natural gas storage, has announced that it has achieved its gas stock target for the 2025-2026 cold season more than 41 days ahead of schedule.
The company said it exceeded both the deadline set by European regulations and the average filling level across Europe.
The stored natural gas quantity is 2.59 billion cubic metres (bcm), from a total active capacity of 2.87 bcm per cycle, which represents a filling level of 90.30%.
"Given the current rate of natural gas injection and the agreed programme with storage service beneficiaries for the next month, we estimate that by the end of October 2025, we will reach maximum capacity, with our depots 100% full. This performance provides us with solid energy security for the coming winter," said Bogdan Nicolae Stănescu, Chairman of the Depogaz Board of Directors.
Depogaz operates five underground storage facilities developed in depleted gas fields, which provide approximately 90.54% of Romania's total storage capacity. These include: Bilciurești (active capacity: 1.31 bcm, extraction capacity: 14 million cubic metres/day), Urziceni (active capacity: 0.36 bcm, extraction capacity: 4.5 million cubic metre/day), Bălăceanca (active capacity: 0.05 bcm, extraction capacity: 1.2 million cubic metres/day), Ghercești (active capacity: 0.25 bcm, extraction capacity: 2 million cubic metres/day) and Sărmășel (active capacity: 0.9 bcm, extraction capacity: 7.5 million cubic metres/day.).
At the same time, Depogaz is currently undertaking investment projects totalling RON 2.3 billion (€467 million) aimed at expanding its storage and extraction capacities.
