The German family-owned STIHL Group has officially inaugurated its first production site dedicated exclusively to battery technology in Oradea, Romania, representing a strategic investment of €125 million.
The project will serve as the company's European Competence Center for battery packs and battery-powered tools.
“The new plant in Oradea expands our global network and strengthens STIHL's position in the fast-growing battery segment. It is a vital addition that will secure our long-term competitiveness in Europe and support our customers with high-performance products developed and built for professionals and demanding consumers worldwide,” said Dr. Nikolas Stihl, Chairman of the Advisory and Supervisory Board.
The plant, which occupies 47,000 sqm of operational space on a 147,000 sqm site, will play a central role in meeting the increasing demand for battery-powered products in European markets.
Production is set to ramp up gradually, aiming for an annual capacity of 1 million battery packs by 2026. By 2028, this is projected to increase to 1.8 million battery packs and 1.7 million battery-powered tools. Initially, the focus will be on producing battery-powered blowers and AP battery packs from the professional STIHL range, with plans to expand the portfolio to include other equipment like brush cutters and chainsaws over time.
The facility was completed in under 18 months. It is equipped with flexible production lines, a high degree of automation, and incorporates Industry 4.0 principles to ensure digital traceability and operational efficiency.
It has been certified with the Gold standard by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) for its energy-efficient construction and use of renewable energy.
The new plant is expected to create approximately 700 jobs by 2028.
