The Vega Ploiești Refinery, operated by Rompetrol Rafinare, has started producing hexane with a minimum purity of 60%, supporting polypropylene production and the food industry.
The new solvent is supplied to all edible oil factories in Romania.
The production was made possible by optimizations in the N-Hexane unit and quality tests involving additional monitoring to ensure compliance with new specifications. Vega is the only Romanian refinery with the capacity to obtain this product.
"The production of high-purity hexane reflects the company's commitment to innovation, efficiency, and adapting to market needs. We are one of the largest producers in Europe and are recognized worldwide, as we export solvents all over the world," said Sorin Graure, GM of Rompetrol Rafinare.
The new grade achieves higher purity than the previous 50% minimum purity hexane, making it suitable for industrial applications requiring stability. It is used as a solvent in edible oil refining, adhesive production, rubber industry, paint manufacturing, and as an industrial degreasing agent. The refinery can produce approximately 150 tons per day of the 60% purity hexane.
Last year, the Vega refinery produced around 93,000 tons of hexane. National consumption reaches a maximum of 4,000 tons, fully covered by Vega, while most of the product reaches European markets including Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Belgium, and Czech Republic, as well as Asian markets including India, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
