Rheinmetall eyes takeover of bankrupt Mangalia shipyard

German defence group Rheinmetall is considering acquiring the bankrupt shipyard in Mangalia, in partnership with Swiss shipping company MSC. The potential takeover could transform the facility into a dual-use hub for military and civilian shipbuilding.

Rheinmetall has been present in Romania since 2024 through Rheinmetall Automechanica in Mediaș and a powder factory project in Victoria. The company's Naval Systems division, established after acquiring NVL shipyards from the Lürssen Group, positions it as a leading naval systems provider.

MSC brings expertise in global supply chain management to the partnership. The revitalisation of the Mangalia shipyard is expected to have positive effects on the Constanța district and Mangalia city through increased local tax revenue and contributions to the national budget.

The shipyard could employ several thousand people long-term. Plans include developing a dual training system, establishing a centre of excellence and research, and transforming the region into an expertise hub to encourage young people to remain in Romania.

Beyond constructing four ships planned by Rheinmetall's Naval Systems division, the company aims to develop Romania into a major European shipbuilding production hub. "This new beginning opens up strategic prospects for the entire Romanian economy," the company stated, representing an opportunity for industrial reconstruction and strengthening local expertise.
