Manufacturers across Central & Eastern Europe are facing multiple pressures, from rising energy costs to labor shortages and increasing sustainability requirements. Which of these challenges do you believe will have the greatest impact on industrial facilities over the next five years?
These challenges are highly interconnected, but if I had to identify one defining issue, it would be the convergence of workforce shortages and operational efficiency. Manufacturers are under pressure to do more with fewer people, while also reducing energy consumption and meeting increasingly stringent ESG requirements.
The facilities that succeed will be those that leverage technology to improve productivity, reduce waste, and create better working environments. We see growing investment in connected infrastructure that provides real-time operational insights, supports predictive maintenance, and helps organizations make smarter decisions based on data. At the same time, energy efficiency and sustainability will remain high on the agenda as companies seek to lower costs and strengthen resilience against future regulatory and market changes.
Skilled labor remains a critical issue for many manufacturers. How can companies use their physical work environment and facility infrastructure to attract, retain, and support employees more effectively?
People increasingly expect workplaces that are safe, comfortable, and equipped with modern technologies. While salary and career opportunities remain important, the physical work environment has become a significant factor in employee satisfaction and retention.
Many companies underestimate the role that workplace quality plays in supporting employees throughout their shift. Elements such as thermal comfort, ergonomics, air quality, and lighting directly influence how people feel and perform at work. High-quality lighting, for example, helps workers see tasks more clearly, reduces visual strain, and supports a safer, more comfortable environment. It can also make it harder for employees to identify hazards or perform detailed tasks accurately. Research has consistently shown that lighting quality influences both safety and productivity. Sustainability reporting and carbon reduction targets are becoming increasingly important. What are the biggest challenges industrial companies face when trying to measure and improve their environmental performance?
The biggest challenge is often data. Many organizations have ambitious sustainability targets, but gathering reliable, actionable information across large industrial facilities remains a complex task.
Industrial companies need accurate data on energy use, asset performance, and operational efficiency to support both decision-making and reporting. At the same time, reporting frameworks continue to evolve, requiring greater transparency and traceability. This is why connected systems are becoming so valuable. They provide the visibility needed to identify opportunities for improvement, track progress, and support ESG reporting with credible operational data rather than estimates
Digital transformation is reshaping manufacturing. How are technologies such as AI, predictive maintenance, and connected infrastructure changing the way facilities are managed and optimized?
Manufacturing is moving from reactive to proactive operations. Instead of responding to failures after they occur, companies increasingly use connected technologies and data analytics to anticipate issues before they affect production.
Predictive maintenance is a particularly good example. Unplanned downtime remains one of the biggest operational challenges in industrial facilities. Connected infrastructure can continuously monitor asset performance and identify anomalies, enabling maintenance teams to prioritize interventions before disruptions occur. AI further strengthens this capability by helping organizations identify patterns, optimize resource allocation, and improve operational decision-making. The result is greater reliability, improved efficiency, and better utilization of existing assets.
Building owners are being asked to modernize assets while maintaining operational continuity. Which investments currently deliver the strongest business case in terms of energy efficiency, productivity, and operational resilience?
The strongest business cases are typically technologies that deliver value across multiple priorities simultaneously. Connected LED lighting is a good example because it combines substantial energy savings with operational and maintenance benefits.
Modern lighting systems can significantly reduce electricity consumption while also supporting automation, remote monitoring, and data collection. Wireless and scalable solutions also make modernization easier because they can often be deployed with minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Investments that generate immediate savings, improve workplace conditions, and create a foundation for future digital services tend to offer the fastest and most sustainable return on investment.
Lighting is often considered a utility rather than a strategic asset. How do you see connected lighting contributing to productivity, safety, energy management, and ESG performance in modern industrial facilities?
That perception is changing rapidly. Today, lighting is no longer just about illumination. It is becoming part of a facility's digital infrastructure.
Connected lighting can support several business objectives at the same time. From a productivity perspective, it helps maintain consistent, high-quality lighting conditions that support visual performance and operational accuracy. From a safety standpoint, it enables better visibility and asset monitoring. On the sustainability side, intelligent controls such as occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, and scheduling can significantly reduce energy consumption and associated emissions.
Perhaps most importantly, connected lighting generates operational data. This enables facility managers to measure performance, optimize energy use, support ESG reporting, and integrate lighting into broader building management strategies. In that sense, lighting evolves from a cost center into a source of business intelligence.
Looking ahead to 2030, what will distinguish the most successful manufacturing and logistics facilities in Central & Eastern Europe, and what should business leaders prioritize today to prepare for that future?
The most successful facilities will be those that are intelligent, data-driven, and adaptable. They will use connected technologies not only to improve efficiency, but also to create safer and more sustainable workplaces.
By 2030, competitiveness will increasingly depend on the ability to optimize energy use, automate routine processes, reduce downtime, and generate actionable insights from operations. Facilities will need flexibility to adapt to changing workforce requirements, evolving ESG regulations, and new business models.
For business leaders, the priority today should be building a digital-ready infrastructure. Investments in connected systems, energy-efficient technologies, and data visibility create benefits in the short term, while also laying the foundation for future innovation. The organizations that start this transition now will be best positioned to thrive in an increasingly complex industrial landscape.
