The Romanian government has set a budget deficit target of 8.4% of GDP for this year, as agreed with representatives from the EC, according to PM Ilie Bolojan.

He stated that meeting this year's deficit goal could pave the way for a target of just over 6% of GDP next year.

The PM said: “This translates to a deficit of around RON 159 billion, which is approximately €32 billion. We expect the recently adopted legislative packages to have an effect of about 0.6% to 0.7% of GDP this year. This is because the measures will only be in effect for the last three to four months of the year, and their impact will be significantly reduced when annualised. The full effects of these measures, however, are projected to exceed 2.5% of GDP next year.”

In addition, the PM has emphasised the government's focus on absorbing over €10 billion in National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) funds, a key component of this year's and next year's investment budget.
