PPC Renewables Romania will build a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 60 MW / 120 MWh at the Târgușor wind farm in Constanța County.

The project, valued at €26.2 million, is co-financed through the Modernisation Fund with €2.9 million in European funding.

The BESS will be implemented at the Zephyr 1 wind farm, which includes 52 turbines with a total installed capacity of 120 MW. Located in Nicolae Bălcescu administrative unit, the storage system is part of PPC Renewables Romania's plan to expand its renewable energy portfolio with storage projects that contribute to grid stability.

"This is the third storage project announced by PPC Renewables Romania and marks the acceleration of the company's storage portfolio development," the company stated. The firm plans to add new storage capacities this year as it approaches the 2 GW milestone in Romania.

The project involves completing construction and infrastructure elements, operational roads, access routes, site fencing, safety lighting and monitoring systems, plus building areas for operations and maintenance. The Modernisation Fund provides 11.05% of eligible costs, with PPC Renewables Romania contributing the remaining €23.3 million.

PPC Renewables Romania is the largest private renewable energy producer in Romania with 1.6 GW of installed capacity. The PPC Group aims to reach 12.7 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2028 across Greece, Romania, Italy and Bulgaria.
