Holcim Romania has signed a funding agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) for the Carbon Hub CPT01 project, a carbon capture and storage initiative.

Through this program, Romania has received the first funding granted through the EU Innovation Fund, one of the largest programmes dedicated to implementing low-carbon technologies.

Developed by Holcim Romania in partnership with Carmeuse, Carbon Hub CPT01 represents a step in decarbonising energy-intensive industries and transforming the construction sector in Eastern Europe. The project will capture carbon emissions generated in both cement and lime production processes and enable their permanent geological storage, reducing industrial emissions from the facilities.

Carbon Hub CPT01 is designed to become the first large-scale onshore carbon capture and storage project in Eastern Europe, positioning Romania at the forefront of climate innovation and industrial decarbonisation in the region. Once operational, the project will enable production of approximately two million tonnes of near-zero emission cement annually.

Ionel Ungureanu, Area Production Manager at Carmeuse, said: "Projects like Carbon Hub CPT01 demonstrate that real industrial decarbonisation requires solid partnerships."

The project contributes to implementing European policy frameworks including the European Clean Industrial Deal, Net-Zero Industry Act and the EU Strategy for industrial carbon management, accelerating the implementation of carbon capture technologies and supporting the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
