The rapid development of online commerce in recent years has transformed locker networks from an alternative delivery solution into an essential component of Romania's logistics infrastructure, according to representatives of Keba Romania, a provider of infrastructure and technology solutions for logistics, banking services and electric mobility.

According to Keba Romania representatives, the expansion of locker networks has supported the development pace of online commerce by increasing the accessibility and flexibility of delivery services. The e-commerce market grew by approximately €400 million in 2025, from €7.7 billion to €8.1 billion.

"A few years ago, lockers were seen as an additional option for parcel delivery. Today they are part of the infrastructure that online commerce relies on to support increasingly large volumes of orders," said Elena Turda, CEO of Keba Romania. "Based on the adoption rate and market evolution, we estimate that the expansion of locker networks and out-of-home deliveries facilitated between 20% and 40% of the incremental growth of online commerce in the last year."

Keba Romania has delivered over 5,000 lockers to the local market and collaborates with some of the most important courier and logistics companies in Romania. According to company representatives, market maturation is also changing the criteria by which these solutions are evaluated. While in the early years the focus was on rapid network expansion, today operators place increasing importance on reliability, operating costs, energy efficiency and integration capacity with logistics platforms.

"The market is entering a new stage of development. We no longer discuss just the number of lockers installed, but the performance and sustainability of an infrastructure used daily by millions of people," added Turda. This trend is part of a broader economic transformation where consumers expect to access services when they need them, similar to other markets where Keba operates, such as self-service banking solutions and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
