Romania's inflation hits 10.85% in May 2026

Romania's annual inflation rate climbed to 10.85% in May from 10.71% in April, driven by rising costs across all sectors, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Services led the price increases with a 13.53% rise, followed by non-food goods at 12.54% and food products at 6.78%. The consumer price index for May 2026 compared to April 2026 reached 100.58%.

"The annual inflation rate in May 2026 compared to May 2025 was 10.9%. The average rate of consumer price changes in the last 12 months (June 2025 - May 2026) compared to the previous 12 months (June 2024 - May 2025) was 9.4%," INS stated.

The harmonised index of consumer prices showed a monthly increase of 100.69% in May compared to April. The annual inflation rate based on the harmonised index reached 9.7% in May 2026 compared to May 2025.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has revised its inflation forecast upward to 5.5% for the end of 2026, up from the previous 3.9% projection, and expects inflation to reach 2.9% by the end of 2027.
