Hidroelectrica signed a €188.5 million contract for the refurbishment of Râul Mare Retezat Hydropower Plant. The project aims to modernize and improve the efficiency of the company's generation capacities.

The procurement procedure began in September 2025, with the contract initially estimated at €193.3 million. Following evaluation, the contract was awarded to a consortium led by Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios and Andritz Hydro, along with several subcontractors including Las Prom, GD Mașini de Ridicat, and Electromontaj Carpați.

Although the plant has an installed capacity of 335 MW since commissioning, it has operated at approximately 200 MW due to equipment limitations. The refurbishment project will recover approximately 135 MW of capacity, contributing to increased generation capacity and strengthening Romania's energy security.

The investment will replace main electromechanical equipment and implement modern technological solutions. The project includes installing new vertical Francis turbines, modernizing generators, excitation and automation systems, full SCADA integration, and rehabilitating electrical and civil infrastructure. Modern security, monitoring and fire protection systems will also be implemented.

"The refurbishment aims to recover installed capacity and increase energy efficiency, improve the reliability and availability of the facilities, reduce operating costs and maintain the plant's role within the National Power System," the company stated. The project is part of Hidroelectrica's broader investment programme focused on modernizing hydropower infrastructure and aligning with current technological standards.
