Business Forum
Romania's telecom sector recorded a 5% fall in revenues last year compared to 2023, reaching approximately €3.2 billion, according to data released on Friday by the telecom regulator ANCOM.

The revenue decrease was primarily due to wholesale telephone services. Within this sector, internet services (fixed and mobile) generated 40% of total revenues, mobile telephony 29%, TV program retransmission 15%, fixed telephony 8%, and other network/service types 8%.

Based on revenues from electronic communications networks and services, the leading providers were Orange (36%), Digi (29%), and Vodafone (24%).

Regarding fixed internet connections, Gigabit connections increased by 16% over the past year to nearly 2.4 million, mainly due to an 8% rise in fiber optic connections (FTTH) to homes/offices, totaling 5.4 million. Overall, fixed internet connections saw a 3% increase to 6.8 million, with the majority (95%) offering speeds exceeding 100 Mbps. Concurrently, 35% of connections provide speeds of at least 1 Gbps.

Additionally, the fixed internet coverage rate per hundred households was 83% (89% in urban areas and 75% in rural areas). In terms of the number of connections, the top three providers are Digi (72%), Orange (16%), and Vodafone (10%).

Last year, the top mobile internet providers, based on active connections, were Orange (35%), Digi (30%), and Vodafone (22%).

Based on the number of active SIM cards, Orange held a market share of 35%, followed by Digi (28%) and Vodafone (25%).
