The Gădălin - Suceava 400 kV OPL (single circuit) is set to be the longest power line in Romania, spanning 260 kilometres, connecting the regions of Transylvania and Moldova across a challenging mountainous terrain. This project has a total contract value of RON 688.3 million (€138.8 million) excluding VAT.
The line's construction, awarded to the association led by Electromontaj, has an execution duration of 69 months. It is one of 11 investment projects funded by the Modernisation Fund, contributing RON 492.45 million (€99.3 million). Crucially, the new line will facilitate the integration of wind farms planned for construction in Moldova and Dobrogea.
The second major project is the Romanian section of the Suceava (RO) - Bălţi (MD) 400 kV Interconnection OPL, which represents a strategically important investment with a value of RON 133.4 million (€26.9 million) excluding VAT. The works, also executed by the Electromontaj-led association, have a duration of 52 months.
Ştefăniţă Munteanu, CEO Transelectrica, said, "Together with our contractual partners, Transelectrica is committed to delivering flagship investments for Romania in the energy sector. These are two large-scale projects with historical impact, and the responsibility for their timely completion under the agreed conditions falls to us."
This new line is central to ensuring the energy security of the Republic of Moldova by diversifying its supply sources. It will also facilitate cross-border energy exchanges and accelerate the integration of renewable energy sources in the north-east of Romania.
The primary goal is to provide a 400 kV interconnection that links the Republic of Moldova to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).
