Distribuție Oltenia, Romania's distribution operator with the largest number of prosumers connected to the grid, released results of a national study examining Romanians' level of information, perception and behaviours related to sustainability and energy.
Energy consumption habits represent the main way Romanians interact with sustainability concepts. 83% of respondents turn off lights or unplug devices when not using them, while 55% choose to walk or use public transport to reduce fuel consumption. However, one in three Romanians rarely or never discuss sustainability, and 10% declare they don't inform themselves about this topic at all.
Cost reduction represents the main stimulus for energy efficiency, mentioned by 85% of respondents, followed by environmental protection (51%) and interest in a more efficient home (27%). While 41% of Romanians say they are already attentive to consumption, 36% consider they would need financial resources to invest in efficiency, and one in 10 feels discouraged due to lack of useful information.
The Oltenia region shows greater receptivity to sustainability messages in energy. 40% of regional respondents say they learn about sustainability and energy directly from companies, compared to just 28% nationally. Interest in the energy distributor's ESG actions is higher, with approximately 70% of Oltenia residents interested, 10 percentage points above the national level.
"The study results show us how Romanians view sustainability and what expectations they have from us. Based on them, we can better adapt our initiatives," said Angelica Barbu, Chief Administration Officer at Distribuție Oltenia.
The research was conducted through iVox Research platform between 8-24 November 2025, using CAWI method on a national sample of 1,970 respondents.
