Romania leads EU in inflation during August

Business Forum
Romania recorded the highest annual inflation rate in the EU in August 2025 at 8.5%, according to the latest data from Eurostat.

This figure significantly surpasses the average annual inflation rate for the EU, which remained stable at 2.4% in August, and for the euro area, which was also stable at 2.0%.

The report highlights a considerable disparity in price trends across the continent. While Romania's inflation soared, other Member States experienced much lower rates.

The lowest annual rates were registered in Cyprus (0.0%), France (0.8%), and Italy (1.6%). Following Romania, the highest rates were seen in Estonia (6.2%) and Croatia (4.6%).

The figures, published by Eurostat, show that when compared with July 2025, annual inflation decreased in nine Member States, remained stable in four, and rose in fourteen.

The primary contributor to the annual euro area inflation rate was services, which added +1.44 percentage points (pp), followed by food, alcohol & tobacco (+0.62 pp), and non-energy industrial goods (+0.18 pp). Energy had a negative contribution to the rate, at -0.19 pp.
