Business Forum
Romania recorded the highest annual inflation rate in the European Union in March 2026, reaching a peak of 9.0%.

According to data released by Eurostat, the country's price growth significantly outpaced the EU average, which climbed to 2.8% from 2.1% in February. This surge marks a notable increase from the 2.5% rate recorded in the EU a year earlier.

The euro area also experienced an upward trend, with annual inflation rising to 2.6% in March, compared to 1.9% in February and 2.2% in the previous year.

While the majority of Member States saw prices rise, Romania's 9.0% rate remains an outlier, followed by Croatia at 4.6% and Lithuania at 4.4%. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Denmark registered the lowest annual rate at 1.0%, while Czechia, Cyprus, and Sweden all stood at 1.5%.

The inflationary pressure across the euro area was primarily driven by services, which added 1.49 percentage points to the annual rate. Other significant contributors included energy (+0.48 pp), food, alcohol, and tobacco (+0.45 pp), and non-energy industrial goods (+0.13 pp).
