EV market in Romania expected to match 2024 performance

Business Forum
The electric vehicle market saw a significant 89% increase in registrations to 1,335 new electric vehicles in August 2025 compared to the same period last year.

Romania's electric fleet grew by 7,005 units in the first eight months of 2025, with 7,929 new vehicles registered and 924 de-registered. With only four months remaining, the market needs 4,748 more units to match 2024's performance, indicating that it is on track to at least equal last year's figures.

The August sales figures also shifted the model rankings. The Hyundai Kona led the month with 298 units, followed by the Tesla Model 3 (176 units) and the Hyundai Inster (110 units). In a surprising turn, the Dacia Spring, a long-time market leader, dropped to 28th place with just eight units registered. The Dacia Spring remains the most popular EV in the overall fleet with 19,146 units, representing 32.9% of the total, but its top position is at risk if low sales persist.

Claudiu Suma, CEO of LEKTRI.CO, said: “We are observing a continuous consolidation of the electric car market. Even without the Rabla programme, which was postponed from its usual schedule this year, the August figures confirm solid demand. We estimate that 2025 will end at a similar level to, or even above, 2024, which confirms the maturing of the local e-mobility market."

The total electric vehicle fleet has reached 58,235 registered units as of the end of August, including 50 vehicles that were de-registered during the month.

This growth is paralleled by the continuous expansion of the charging infrastructure, with major operators regularly installing new charging points.
