Domeniile Ostrov: Satisfactory harvest in extreme weather conditions

Business Forum
Domeniile Ostrov announces the completion of the 2024 table grape harvest campaign, marked by unusual weather conditions that significantly impacted grape production. Following an extremely hot summer, followed by heavy rains, table grape production was reduced by approximately 20-30% compared to last year.

Harvesting began earlier in August due to intense heat, and the weather conditions led to accelerated ripening of the grapes. However, the quality and taste of future wines will not be affected. Late rains caused the grapes to crack, leading to a significant reduction in production. In this campaign, losses of approximately 40% were recorded for both wine and table grapes, and wine prices may increase in the near future.

The grape variety that fared better under these conditions was Cabernet Sauvignon, while Fetească Neagră and Pinot Noir were harvested early, so production was not as severely affected. The more sensitive variety, Chardonnay, also suffered from the weather conditions. Table grapes were also affected, but irrigation systems helped maintain minimal production levels.

"Although we faced significant challenges due to extreme weather, prolonged drought, which was positively managed thanks to the drip irrigation system that covers the entire cultivated area. We are proud of how we handled the harvest and ensured the quality of our wines. Our team made considerable efforts to maintain the high standards our customers expect. We remain committed to providing exceptional products and are confident that, despite the difficulties, Domeniile Ostrov wines will continue to be appreciated in the market," said Oana Belu, CEO of Domeniile Ostrov.

In the wine market, Domeniile Ostrov recorded a 10% increase in sales in the first half of 2024, and a 12% increase is expected by the end of the year. Wine sales from January 1 to August 31, 2024, reached nearly 3 million liters, reflecting consistent demand for Domeniile Ostrov products.
