US reviews Romania's Visa Waiver program entry

Business Forum
The US government is currently reviewing Romania's recent inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) to ensure it meets the program's strict security requirements.

During this review period, the US has paused the implementation of the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for Romanian citizens. This pause will remain in effect until the government completes its review.

Romanians who wish to travel to the US for short-term business or tourism are advised to continue applying for the appropriate nonimmigrant (“B”) visa at a US embassy or consulate.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) said the program is under review and added that the country has been designated as a participating state in January 2025.

Romanian PM Marcel Ciolacu said the move of the US government was a technical one, adding that Romania will work to clarify any issues with its American counterparts.
