Romania's energy system is operating without any issues, says minister

Romania's Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja said, “our national energy system is operating without any issues,” in response to the massive power outages reported in Spain and Portugal.

Burduja added that “the situation within our country is being closely monitored and is under control.”

“Regarding the causes of the blackout in Spain and Portugal, the immediate priority is to restore electricity supply to all consumers. In the coming hours and days, a thorough analysis of the causes and effects will certainly be conducted, including the necessary measures at both national and European levels. It is currently too early to speculate on working hypotheses,” wrote the minister in a LinkedIn post.

Romania's energy consumption amounted to around 5,000 MW on Monday at 5 PM, with close to 70% of supply covered by nuclear, hydro and solar production.

Meanwhile, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen added that the situation is closely watched by the Electricity Coordination Group alongside national and European authorities.

Eduardo Prieto, Head of Operation Services at grid operator Red Eléctrica, said big power swings caused Spain's electricity network to disconnect from the European grid, according to a WSJ report.

The power outage disrupted transport and communications in Spain and Portugal.
