OMV Petrom secures key supply deal for sustainable aviation fuel

Business Forum
OMV Petrom announced a significant step towards sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, having secured a crucial feedstock for its Petrobrazi refinery.

The company has entered into a five-year supply contract with Bulgarian Astra Bioplants for the acquisition of pre-treated used cooking oil, with deliveries slated to commence in 2028. This agreement includes an option for a three-year extension.

The pre-treated used cooking oil will serve as the primary raw material for the SAF/HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) plant currently under construction at the Petrobrazi refinery.

The pricing for the contract is based on a formula indexed to an international quotation, and the maximum total quantity of the contract is 0.6 million tonnes, with an estimated value exceeding €700 million at current market quotations.

This new contract, combined with a supply agreement for pre-treated vegetable oil concluded in June 2024, means OMV Petrom has now secured over 80% of the feedstock required for the first eight years of production at the SAF/HVO plant.

Astra Bioplants is the largest biodiesel producer in the region and a long-standing partner of OMV Petrom.
