Rețele Electrice Romania launches €40 million grid upgrade

Business Forum
Rețele Electrice Romania, part of the PPC group, has launched a procurement procedure for modernising medium and low voltage networks in Bocșa, Caraș-Severin county. The project, worth over RON 198 million (€40 million) excluding VAT, will benefit approximately 17,000 inhabitants and is co-financed through the Modernisation Fund.

"Through this investment made with the support of European funds, we demonstrate our commitment to the community and its future. The modernisation of the electricity grid in the city of Bocșa will increase the resilience and reliability of the infrastructure, ensuring a safe and continuous supply for the inhabitants," said Mihai Pește, General Director of Rețele Electrice Romania. The project aims to reconfigure the distribution network for the medium voltage area and increase the degree of digitisation of the distribution network.

The modernisation will involve replacing cables and conductors over distances of almost 38 km for medium voltage networks and 81 km for low voltage ones. Part of the medium voltage network will be moved underground, with routes chosen to avoid interference with historical monuments, archaeological sites or critical institutions.

Additionally, 47 transformer stations will be modernised, with some being moved from overhead poles into concrete structures. The network elements will be switched to a remote control system and over 7,300 connections will be rebuilt. The total project value amounts to RON 204 million excluding VAT, with maximum funding of RON 146 million from the Modernisation Fund.

The deadline for submitting bids is January 12 2026, and the works will have a duration of 42 months from contract conclusion. Rețele Electrice Romania operates electricity networks with a total length of approximately 134,000 kilometres across Southern Muntenia, Banat and Dobrogea regions, covering one-third of the local distribution market.
