New car registrations in Romania gain 52.6% in August

New car registrations in Romania saw a substantial increase of 52.6% in August 2025 compared to the same period the previous year, with a total of 15,043 units registered, according to the Association of Automotive Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).

Eco-friendly vehicles recorded a total jump of 74.4%, achieving a market share of 59.9%.
Cars, which account for roughly 89% of the total market, saw the SUV segment take the top spot with a market share of 55.1%, up 60.6%. This was followed by Class C at 25.3% (+34.6%) and Class B at 14.2% (+86.6%).

Petrol-powered engines grew by 27.8%, reaching a share of 33.4%, while diesel engines increased by 31% to 6.7%. Mild-hybrid vehicles also saw a significant boost, with registrations up by 55%, accounting for 24.2% of the total car market.

In August, electric and mild-hybrid/full-hybrid vehicles held a combined market share of 59.9%, making them the most significant segment in the Romanian market. Within this category, full electric vehicles had a 6.3% share, and plug-in hybrids had 6.6%.

For the first eight months of the year, the top three best-selling 100% electric cars were Dacia Spring with 1,163 units, down 47% y/y, Hyundai Kona (441 units) and Tesla Model 3 (305 units).
