Original IP studios drive growth in Romania's gaming sector

Romania's video game development industry recorded a turnover of €343.16 million last year, an increase of approximately 8% compared to the previous year, finds a report by the Romanian Game Developers Association (RGDA) and BT.

The Romanian game development industry comprises 206 active studios. Bucharest concentrates the largest share of these, with 98 studios, followed by Cluj (32), Iași (12), Ilfov (8), Timiș (7), and Brașov (4). 

An additional 45 studios operate in various other counties across the country. Approximately 6,100 professionals are active in this sector, a slightly lower number than in 2023, but one that is generating increased productivity of over €56,000 per employee.

Alexandru Chica, President of RGDA, said: "It is essential to consolidate this evolution and transform it into an accelerated growth by stimulating the production of original games made in Romania."

The share of multinational companies, which accounted for 89% of revenues in 2015, fell to 70% in 2024. At the same time, the service sector grew to 18%. 

Studios developing original IPs have seen the most significant growth, with up to 12% of total revenue coming from original games created in Romania, three times more than 10 years ago. 

Globally, revenues from the gaming industry totalled $187.7 billion.

The group recorded consolidated pro-forma revenue of over RON 2.36 billion (€464 million), up 19.5% compared to the same period in 2024.
