Siemens wins Romania's first hydrogen train contract

Business Forum
Siemens Mobility has been selected by Romania's Railway Reform Authority to deliver 12 hydrogen-powered electric multiple units based on the Mireo Plus H platform. The contract marks Romania's first hydrogen train project and one of the first in CEE.

The deal includes both train delivery and maintenance services for an initial 15-year period, with an option to extend for another 15 years. Passenger service is scheduled to launch in 2029. "We are proud to deliver the first hydrogen train fleet for Romania. With Mireo Plus H, we combine a proven regional platform with hydrogen technology, enabling zero-emission railway operation on non-electrified lines," said Emil Voinea, CEO of Siemens Mobility Romania.

The Mireo Plus H features an electric propulsion system based on hydrogen fuel cells, complemented by batteries for energy storage. The batteries are charged either through the fuel cell system or regenerative braking, ensuring efficient energy use and zero local emissions during operation. The vehicle concept has been optimised to reduce weight, component complexity, energy consumption and maintenance costs.

The trains for Romania are configured as two-unit articulated sets with a maximum operating speed of 120 km/h. Designed for single-driver operation, the bidirectional vehicles are ideal for regional passenger services. Each unit offers 131 fixed seats and 5 folding seats. The trains can operate in multiple traction with up to two coupled units.

The contract includes a maintenance package for 15 years, with activities performed locally in Romania, including at a dedicated depot in Bucharest. Maintenance will be supported by Railigent X digital solutions for fleet and maintenance management. By replacing diesel rolling stock, the new hydrogen trains will contribute to reducing emissions and noise in regional rail transport.
