Aquila invests €5 million in AI automation at Romanian warehouse

Business Forum
Romanian FMCG distributor Aquila has completed a €5 million investment in an AI-based automation solution at its warehouse in Drăgomirești, Ilfov County.

The project aims to improve operational performance for fast-moving consumer goods distribution.

The automation solution has increased picking and delivery accuracy from 92% to 99% and ensures product traceability across the entire logistics flow. A key feature is the integration of AI-based vision systems that identify products directly from images without relying on labels or manual scanning, using shape, colour and visual characteristics.

"Our investments represent concrete steps toward a more efficient and sustainable future. In a context where portfolio expansion and volume growth have increased the complexity of the logistics operations, investing in automation and Artificial Intelligence is a strategic decision for Aquila," said Răzvan Bagherea, Organisation and Human Resources Director at Aquila. "We chose technologies that give us control, speed, and accuracy in deliveries, allowing us to scale volumes without proportional increases in resources."

The investment is part of a broader programme through which Aquila has allocated over €30 million since its Bucharest Stock Exchange listing for fleet renewal, logistics automation, and IT solutions implementation. The company operates 4 logistics centres, 16 distribution centres across Romania, Moldova and Hungary, and 7 cross-docking points, with storage capacity exceeding 145,000 pallets.

Aquila recorded revenues of nearly RON 3 billion (€587 million) in 2024, a 17% increase from the previous year. The company serves over 72,000 points of sale across three countries and operates a fleet of more than 1,600 vehicles.
