Electrica launches Romania's first AI energy management system

Business Forum
Electrica has completed the Artificial Intelligence for Active Energy Management (AIAE) project, developed in partnership with Romanian startup Renergia and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.

This marks the launch of Romania's first intelligent energy management system for buildings and introduces a new model for energy consumption management based on data, automation and analysis.

The platform has processed over 48 million data sets, and its development required over 1 million lines of code, demonstrating the complexity and maturity level of the solution. The initiative also included a research and professional training component, involving 3 PhD students and 4 researchers under 30 years old, contributing to the development of a new generation of specialists in energy and artificial intelligence.

"Digitalisation is not a parallel activity. It is critical infrastructure for the energy system. Through AIAE, we have moved from concept to implementation and demonstrated that artificial intelligence can deliver concrete results in building operations," said Alexandru Chiriță, CEO Electrica. The next step is extending the solution across the entire Electrica Group.

The AIAE platform functions as a virtual energy manager, capable of analysing energy consumption in real time and transforming large volumes of data into operational decisions. The system identifies consumption patterns, detects deviations and generates automatic recommendations for optimising energy performance. The solution is built on a multi-agent AI architecture and integrates data from multiple sources: electricity consumption, weather information, building technical characteristics and operational context.

Following the project, concrete energy efficiency measures have already been adopted, including automation of operating regimes for certain systems and introduction of policies for shutting down non-essential equipment outside working hours. These measures demonstrate the system's capacity to generate applicable results with direct impact on consumption reduction and increased operational efficiency. The first integration was implemented at Electrica's HQ, and the company plans to replicate the solution across group buildings as part of its digitalisation and operational efficiency strategy.
