Nokian Tyres' Romanian factory earns ISCC PLUS certification

Business Forum
Nokian Tyres' factory in Oradea, Romania has obtained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. With the certification, Nokian Tyres is able to utilize sustainable, ISCC PLUS certified raw materials in its tires.

Nokian Tyres will introduce the certified raw materials when new flagship products are launched. Using the certified materials supports the company in reaching one of its key sustainability goals, which is to increase the share of recycled or renewable raw materials in its tires to 50 percent by 2030.

Replacing fossil-based raw materials with recycled and renewable ones supports the circular economy and decreases tires' carbon footprint, thus making them more environmentally sustainable.

“Nokian Tyres wants to answer consumer needs by creating tires in which sustainability is an essential feature alongside safety, driving comfort, and performance. We already use recycled and renewable raw materials in our tires, and being able to use the ISCC PLUS certified materials in addition to them accelerates the work and complements our own raw material research and innovations,” says Teemu Soini, VP, Innovations & Development at Nokian Tyres.

Nokian Tyres' factory in Romania was inaugurated in September 2024. It sets an industry benchmark by being the first full-scale zero CO2e emission tire factory in the world. All energy used at the factory comes from zero-emission sources such as wind, hydro, biomass, solar energy, or a mix of these. Steam for tire manufacturing is produced without fossil fuels.

ISCC is a globally applicable sustainability certification system. The ISCC PLUS certification ensures compliance with high ecological and social sustainability requirements and traceability throughout the supply chain. Nokian Tyres' passenger car tire factory in Nokia, Finland obtained the ISCC PLUS certification in 2024.
