Helleniq Energy expands in Romania with large wind projects deal

Greek Helleniq Energy Group has purchased two wind projects in Romania and a photovoltaic project in the Bulgarian market as part of an international expansion.

The company's subsidiary, Helleniq Renewables Romania, has completed the acquisition of Ansthall Green Energy, which holds a ready-to-build 96 MW wind project. Construction of this project will begin immediately and is expected to be operational in 2027. It will have secured revenue for 12 years through a virtual Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize for over 50% of its production.

In a separate move, Helleniq Renewables Romania has also signed a binding agreement to acquire Helios & Wind Energy, which owns a ready-to-build wind project with a licensed capacity of 186 MW. This project also has the option to add a 186 MW/186 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The transaction is subject to the approval of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Committee of Romania.

The group is also entering the Bulgarian clean energy market. Helleniq Renewables Bulgaria has acquired Agro NV Properties, which owns a ready-to-build photovoltaic project with a capacity of 123 MWp. This project includes the option to add a 90 MW/180 MWh BESS.The combined capacities of projects acquired in Romania and Bulgaria amount to 400 MW.

With these transactions, Helleniq Energy Group's mature and operating clean energy project portfolio has reached a combined capacity of approximately 1.5 GW, which represents about 75% of the company's target of 2 GW by 2030.

The company also noted that its total renewable energy project portfolio under development has been strengthened to over 6 GW.
