Nucearelectrica signs strategic deal with EDF Group subsidiaries

Business Forum
State-owned nuclear power producer Nuclearelectrica (SNN) has signed two key agreements with subsidiaries of the French EDF Group, Arabelle Solutions and Framatome, to advance its strategic projects.

The first agreement with Arabelle Solutions focuses on the refurbishment of the Unit 1 turbine-generator at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant. This project, currently in its second phase of development, aims to extend the operational life of Unit 1 by an additional 30 years from 2029.

The unit is scheduled to be disconnected from the grid in 2027 and re-commissioned in 2029. Once refurbished, it is expected to generate 5 million MWh per year and prevent the release of 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

Cosmin Ghiță, CEO of Nuclearelectrica, said: “Through our strategies and projects, we want to contribute not only to energy security and the achievement of decarbonization and ESG targets, but also to areas where nuclear energy can prove its usefulness. As a critical aspect to support all our projects, we are equally concerned with nurturing a new generation of specialists in Romania."

The second agreement, signed with Framatome, is for the development of the Innovative Romanian Isotope System (IRIS) Project. This initiative aims to produce the medical radioisotope Lutetium-177 (Lu-177), which is a vital component for advanced cancer treatments.

The objective is to launch the commercial irradiation service in 2028.
