The decision marks Romania's position as the most advanced European country in SMR development and establishes a framework for partnerships and cooperation with authorities for optimal project implementation.
"The SMR project at Doicești positions Romania on the international nuclear industry map through know-how and supply chain development, during an energy transition phase where modular reactors represent a solution for energy security and independence," said Cosmin Ghiță, General Director of Nuclearelectrica. "International reports confirm that the global SMR portfolio has grown by 65% since 2021 to a planned capacity of 22 gigawatts."
The SMR project will replace the 600 MW installed capacity of the former thermal power plant at Doicești with 462 MW of clean energy. The development will create approximately 4,000 jobs: 200 permanent positions, 1,500 during construction, and 2,300 in component production and assembly, alongside the development of related industries and associated investments.
