Romania to sign €500 million EIB deal for key motorway project

Business Forum
The government has greenlit a memorandum to approve a €500 million financing contract between Romania and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support the A1 Sibiu-Pitești motorway project.

The financing contract is part of a total financial assistance package of €1 billion offered by the EIB.

"The first loan, worth €500 million, is scheduled to be signed in October 2025, with a second similar contract potentially being signed in 2026," according to a government statement.

To date, the project has received €1.8 billion in non-reimbursable external financing, while the total project value is approximately €5.4 billion, according to EIB estimates.

The motorway will have a total length of 122.11 km, divided into five sections.

Project implementation began in March 2020 and is estimated to be completed in 2028.
