Romania invests nearly €100 million in regional airports

Business Forum
The Government has approved the Ministry of Development's proposal to allocate RON 484 million (€96 million) from the budgetary reserve fund to finance airport infrastructure investment projects.

These projects are financed through the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (POIM) 2014-2020. Modernization works at the airports are currently ongoing.

The funded investments include:

  • Craiova International Airport expansion and modernisation – RON 250 million (€50 million)
  • Transilvania Târgu Mureș Airport modernisation – RON 108 million (€22 million)
  • Maramureș International Airport passenger terminal expansion and modernisation – RON 65 million (€13 million)
  • Satu Mare Airport infrastructure development, rehabilitation, and modernisation – Over RON 60 million (€12 million)

By implementing these measures, the Government aims to maintain air connectivity and strengthen Romania's strategic position in air transport. This also crucially avoids the European Commission reclaiming RON 1 billion (around €200 million) in non-reimbursable EU funds.
