New car registrations in Romania fall by over 30% in May 2025

New car registrations in the EU saw a modest year-on-year increase of 1.6% in May 2025, reaching a total of 926,582 units.

In Romania, the trend for new car registrations diverged from the overall EU growth. In May 2025, new car registrations in Romania decreased by 32.7% compared to May 2024, totaling 10,521 units. 

Year-to-date figures show an even more significant contraction of 12.8%, with 54,209 units registered from January to May 2025. 

Delving deeper into the power sources for Romania, battery-electric car registrations saw a substantial decrease of 42.7% in May 2025, with only 432 units registered. Hybrid-electric cars, while still a preferred choice in the EU, recorded a more modest increase of 2.5% in Romania during May, with 5,371 units. 

Petrol car registrations plummeted by 56.5% to 2,485 units, and diesel cars also saw a sharp decline of 51.0% to 1,089 units in May. 

In May 2025, hybrid-electric car registrations surged by 16.0%, with 315,597 units sold across the EU. Their market share now stands at a significant 35.1%. 

Battery-electric vehicles (BEV) also saw strong growth, with registrations increasing by 25.0% in May, reaching 142,776 units. 

This pushed their year-to-date market share to 15.4%, up from 12.1% in May 2024. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) recorded their third consecutive month of strong growth, with a 46.9% increase in May. 

Conversely, petrol and diesel cars continued their decline. Petrol car registrations fell by 18.6% in May 2025 year-on-year, bringing their market share down to 28.6% year-to-date from 35.6%. Diesel vehicles experienced an even steeper decline of 27.6% in May, resulting in a 9.5% market share year-to-date.
