The study reveals that only 20% of Romanians say they shop more than usual during Easter or holidays, compared to 63% who increase spending during winter holidays and 39% during Black Friday. Despite 68% of Romanians setting a clear budget for seasonal purchases, nearly the same number admit to exceeding their allocated amount for these occasions in the past year.
Impulse buying remains a challenge, with about a quarter of Romanians frequently or always making spontaneous purchases during festive periods. When asked what they would like to improve to feel more financially independent, over half of respondents said they want to recognise real discounts and avoid spontaneous purchases.
A separate study by Reveal Marketing Research for XTB Romania highlights the financial stress Romanians experience. Approximately 75% of Romanians report anxiety affecting their mental state due to money concerns, while 85% have sleep problems for the same reason. The main sources of financial stress are rising prices, unexpected expenses, job security and debt.
"Although many Romanians set a budget for festive periods, almost as many end up exceeding it. This doesn't indicate lack of control, but difficulty managing momentary pressure, from price increases to social expectations," said Florentina Almăjanu, General Director of CFA Romania Association. "In the case of Easter, where consumer behaviour is more moderate than in other periods, there's a real opportunity for more balanced financial decisions."
