Romania launches tender for final A8 motorway section to Republic of Moldova

Business Forum
The State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport, Irinel Scrioşteanu, announced that the tender for the design and construction of the final lot of the Târgu Neamț - Iași - Ungheni section has been launched.

This segment, an integral part of the Union Motorway (A8), represents a strategic step for regional infrastructure, as it will provide a direct connection to the Bridge of Flowers over the Prut river and, for the first time, extend the high-speed network into the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

The project covers a 15 km route and includes the construction of 14 bridges and passages, as well as two tunnels, the longest of which will be 1,700 m in length. The infrastructure will facilitate access to key sites via two road junctions serving the Regional Hospital and Iași Airport, and the Golăiești junction respectively. Furthermore, the contract provides for a 2.77 km link road between Golăiești and the Ungheni border crossing.

A vital component of the investment is the construction of the first 4.7 km of motorway on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. This segment will ensure the connection to a future multimodal logistics hub, which is to be developed on an 18-hectare site at Berești station in the Ungheni district. The hub is designed as a strategic point on the eastern border of the European Union, with access to the TEN-T network and both European and wide-gauge railway systems. The facility is designed to handle hundreds of thousands of tonnes of cargo annually, with growth potential exceeding 1.5 million tonnes.

The estimated value of the contract for Lot 4 of the A8 is RON 4.7 billion (€945 million), with funding secured through the Security Action for Europe Programme. The public tender procedure is being conducted by the National Road Investment Company (CNIR), and the deadline for the submission of bids has been set for 26 January 2026,
