55% of employees feel tired or overworked daily or several times a week

A survey by Genesis Property found that nearly 55% of employees in Romania feel tired or overworked daily or several times a week, while only 12.5% describe their professional energy levels as very good. More than 16% say they frequently feel exhausted, burned out or close to burnout. The survey was conducted online in July 2026 among 1,026 internet users in Romania.

Workplace pressure stems from multiple sources. Some 20.4% of respondents cite heavy workload as a principal drain on their energy, followed by economic uncertainty at 15.9% and personal financial pressure at 15.4%. Financial concerns also affect job security awareness for nearly a quarter of respondents, while 23% say such pressures raise their stress and fatigue levels. More than 33% of employees identify a lack of time or energy as the main barrier to professional development, ahead of the cost of training programmes or insufficient employer support.

"When people experience constant pressure and fatigue, the workplace experience becomes more important than the space's basic functionality alone. The office needs to provide the right conditions for focus and productivity, while also supporting collaboration, connection and opportunities to recharge. In this context, the working environment becomes an important part of the day-to-day professional experience," said Teodor Stoica, HR Manager at Genesis Property.

Employees' expectations of the office are broadening. Nearly 20% believe it should primarily serve as a place for focus and productivity, 19.24% see it as a space for collaboration and connection, and 17.54% want it to encourage creativity and the exchange of ideas. When it comes to long-term professional balance, financial stability is cited by 15.6% of respondents, time with family by 14.2% and additional days off by 12.5%.

Genesis Property says it is adapting its developments to reflect these needs. At YUNITY Park, its office development in the Pipera area of Bucharest, the company has incorporated green spaces, relaxation areas and community facilities. Total investment in the project has exceeded €50 million. Genesis Property owns and manages two business campuses in Bucharest, YUNITY Park and West Gate Business District, with a combined area of more than 150,000 sqm.

Talent is reshaping the office

The workplace is being redefined by far more than hybrid working. As businesses adapt to AI, changing employee expectations and growing ESG ambitions, the office is evolving into a strategic tool for attracting talent, strengthening culture and improving performance. These themes were at the centre of the workplace panel at Bucharest Business Forum 2026, where experts agreed that successful workplaces are no longer measured by efficiency alone, but by the experience they create for employees.

AI simplifies work but fuels employee anxiety, survey finds

AI has become increasingly embedded in employees' day-to-day work over the past year. More than 48% of employees see AI as a tool that simplifies their work; however, many remain concerned about the broader implications of its growing integration, according to a survey conducted by Genesis Property early this year, on a sample of 1,146 employees.
