Auchan Romania expands renewable energy network to 40 locations

Business Forum
Auchan Romania is consolidating its transition to green energy, accelerating the integration of renewable sources in its operations.

The retailer has reached approximately 60% renewable energy for 40 locations, including Auchan and ATAC hypermarkets and supermarkets, as well as the HQs, through energy traded via Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE).

The transition to green energy results from a phased approach, beginning with investments in renewable energy production. Auchan Romania implemented an extensive network of photovoltaic panels on store rooftops, directly contributing to reducing dependence on external sources and optimising energy consumption.

As part of this initiative, the retailer established Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE) in early 2023, a company that purchases and supplies energy for Auchan locations. Starting in June 2025, Auchan Romania began supplying energy traded directly through ARE, progressively expanding the network of powered locations.

By March 2026, the retailer reached 40 locations powered through internally traded energy, including hypermarkets and supermarkets in cities such as Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Brașov, Iași, Constanța, Craiova, Galați, Oradea, Pitești, Sibiu, Bacău and Suceava.

Cristian Drăghici, Director of Auchan Renewable Energy, said: "The rapid expansion of Auchan Renewable Energy confirms that energy can become a strategic pillar in retail operations. By combining our own production with an integrated acquisition and supply model, we not only increase the share of renewable energy but also gain better control over consumption and costs."

Auchan Romania continues producing its own energy through photovoltaic panels on 16 hypermarkets, generating volumes of green energy annually. The retailer also uses renewable energy in logistics operations through consumption from existing photovoltaic installations on warehouses.
