Inflation rate fell to 4.95% in January 2025, down from 5.14% in December

The annual inflation rate fell to 4.95% in January 2025, down from 5.14% in December, as food prices rose by 4.54%, non-food goods by 4.60% and services by 6.54%, according to data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (NIS).

”The consumer price index in January 2025 compared to December 2024 was 100.92%. Annual inflation rate in the month of January 2025 compared to January 2024 was 5%. The average rate of change in consumer prices over the last 12 months (February 2024 to January 2025) compared to the previous 12 months (February 2023 to January 2024) was 5.4%,” according to the NSI press release.

According to data presented in November 2024 by the governor of the National Bank of Romania (NBR), Mugur Isărescu, the inflation forecast for the end of 2025 is estimated at 3.5%.

The Consumer Price Index for January 2025 compared to December 2024 was 100.92%. Over the one-year period, food goods increased by 4.54%, non-food goods by 4.6% and services by 6.54%.

Among food products, the most expensive were margarine (+19.52%), fresh fruit (+11.05%), other vegetables and canned vegetables (+10.66%), fruit and canned fruit (+10.28%), citrus and other southern fruits (+9.7%), butter (-11%), sugar (-6.5%) and flour (2.7%).

As for non-food products, detergents (+11.97%), chemicals (+8.86%), tobacco, cigarettes (+8.67%), but also books, newspapers, magazines (+7.41%), were more expensive.

In the services category, postal services (+19.14%), hygiene and cosmetics (+11.45%), water, sewerage, sanitation (+12.41%) were the most expensive.
