OMV Petrom prepares exploration drilling in Bulgarian Black Sea block

Business Forum
Oil major OMV Petrom has started preparations for exploration drilling in Bulgaria's Han Asparuh offshore block, which is operated together with NewMed Energy.

The drillship Globetrotter I has arrived in Bulgaria, with the first well location Vinekh-1 situated approximately 200 km east of Varna in water depths of around 2,000 metres. Final preparations are underway to commence drilling by the end of the year.

"We are excited to start exploration drilling in Bulgaria - a milestone that strengthens our presence in the Black Sea," stated Christina Verchere, CEO of OMV Petrom. "Having two rigs operating simultaneously, one offshore Bulgaria and another offshore Romania, is an achievement for our team."

The exploration campaign includes two wells with a total budget of around €170 million. Halliburton will provide integrated drilling services, while SLB will handle well testing. The drilling campaign is expected to take approximately five months.

"The start of this drilling campaign marks a milestone for our partnership and for the development of energy resources in the region," said Yossi Abu, CEO of NewMed Energy. The Han Asparuh block covers 13,712 sqm in the Western Black Sea, south of the Neptun block in Romania.
