Hidroelectrica secures funding for large battery storage project

Business Forum
Hidroelectrica has signed a contract for €8.7 million in non-reimbursable financing from the Modernisation Fund to implement a battery storage facility at the Porțile de Fier II hydroelectric plant.

The investment project has a total estimated value of approximately €62 million and involves installing a capacity of 64 MW and 256 MWh, making it the largest battery storage project developed by the company to date. The investment contributes to increasing the flexibility of the energy system and efficient integration of renewable sources by providing balancing and regulation services.

The project implementation leverages existing hydroelectric infrastructure and available connection capacities, allowing for cost optimisation and accelerated implementation timelines. The project also strengthens Hidroelectrica's role in developing flexibility infrastructure for the National Power System.

"The financing for the Porțile de Fier II project allows us to take a natural step towards a more flexible and balanced energy system. Energy storage is no longer an option, but a necessity, especially in a context where production from renewable sources is increasing, while also growing the need for balancing services," said Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.

Hidroelectrica is Romania's largest renewable energy producer and one of the most important players in the Southeast European energy sector. With a portfolio of over 6.3 GW installed capacity in hydroelectric plants, combined with the Crucea wind farm, the company contributes to national energy security and achieving decarbonisation objectives set by EU policies.
