Romania to buy supercomputer for AI Factory

Business Forum
Romania is set to establish its first national AI infrastructure through a joint project launched by the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest and the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest, alongside academic, research, and industry partners.

Romania is one of six European countries selected in the latest evaluation round of the EuroHPC - AI Factories program, a European initiative dedicated to developing AI and supercomputing centres. The RO AI Factory will involve the acquisition and operation of a state-of-the-art supercomputer optimised for artificial intelligence, along with the development of a suite of advanced services and infrastructures for research, business, and the public sector.

Priority areas for application include: manufacturing and industry, cybersecurity, life sciences, digital public services, and autonomous systems. The initiative will support researchers and universities, as well as startups, SMEs, and public institutions, by providing access to high-performance computing resources, datasets, software tools, and training programs, according to an ICI București press release issued on Friday.

Adrian-Victor Vevera, General Director of ICI Bucharest, said: "The RO AI Factory will be the cornerstone for future European AI infrastructure projects, paving the way for new investments, collaborations, and international partnerships."

The RO AI Factory will be hosted and co-coordinated by ICI Bucharest and Politehnica Bucharest, bringing together a robust consortium of national partners from research, education, and industry.
