Romania's trade deficit widens during H1 2025

Romania's trade deficit widened to €16.71 billion in H1 2025, an increase of €1.61 billion (+10.7%) compared to the same period in 2024. This expansion occurred despite growth in both exports and imports, with imports seeing a more significant increase, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

FOB exports totalled €47.67 billion, while CIF imports amounted to €64.38 billion during H1 2025. Compared to H1 2024, exports grew by 3.1% and imports increased by 4.9%.

In June 2025 alone, exports were €8.21 billion and imports were €10.59 billion, resulting in a monthly trade deficit of €2.37 billion. When compared to June 2024, exports in June 2025 saw a notable increase of 6.3%, while imports grew by 0.6%.

Machinery and transport equipment accounted for the largest shares in the structure of both exports and imports in the first half of the year, representing 47.3% of total exports and 36.2% of total imports. Other significant categories included "other manufactured goods," which made up 27.6% of exports and 28.1% of imports.

Trade with other EU27 countries remained dominant, with Intra-EU27 trade representing 71.7% of total exports (€34.16 billion) and 72.3% of total imports (€46.55 billion) in H1 2025. 

Conversely, Extra-EU27 trade constituted 28.3% of exports (€13.50 billion) and 27.7% of imports (€17.83 billion).
