PPC Group expands solar portfolio in Romania

Business Forum
PPC Group has strengthened its renewable energy presence in Romania with a new 130 MW photovoltaic plant in Călugăreni, located 40 km south of Bucharest, which was recently connected to the grid.

The solar facility uses 227,240 bifacial photovoltaic panels and is expected to generate over 193 GWh annually, enough to meet the energy needs of more than 48,500 households. The project will prevent approximately 116,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

"We remain committed to the Group's strategy to be a dominant energy pillar in the wider region of Southeastern Europe," said Konstantinos Mavros, Deputy CEO of RES PPC Group. "The new photovoltaic plant in Romania confirms our position in the Romanian renewable energy market. We are constantly strengthening our green portfolio, with geographical and technological diversification, to maximise the benefits from the green transition and the interconnected energy market."

The Călugăreni plant is part of an agreement between PPC Group and Metlen Energy & Metals for renewable energy projects. A total of 460 MW of photovoltaic parks under this agreement are expected to be constructed by the end of the year.

With the addition of the new facility, PPC Group's installed capacity will surpass 6.5 GW, of which 1.5 GW is in Romania. According to its three-year strategic plan, the company aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to 11.8 GW by 2027, with more than 60% of the planned additions already under construction or ready for construction.

Green finance becomes the new rule for Romanian real estate

Sustainability criteria are playing an increasing role when banks finance real estate projects in Romania, while buildings that meet green finance standards can obtain better terms. These are the findings of a study carried out by Colliers on the local market, based on responses from four commercial banks, which together hold more than half of the Romanian banking system's assets, and two multilateral development banks active in the real estate sector. The clearest rule identified for new buildings is the NZEB-10% standard, applied by all institutions analysed. All six require the primary energy demand of a new building to be at least 10% below the national NZEB threshold, and a project that does not meet this standard may still be financed, but the loan will generally not be classified as green finance.
